Hi,
May I pick your brains, please?
I've got Windows 98se & Taltalk broadband. I've got a smartax modem.
But I can't make the modem work with my computer. Any thoughts?
Best,
Neil

Let me hazard a guess and say this is a USB modem, right..?

USB and Win98 are uneasy bedfellows. If you have an Ethernet port on your
machine, ditch the USB device and get a decent modem/router. If you don't
have Ethernet, cards are cheap and plentiful, add it..!

Hello

The TalkTalk USB modem will work fine on Windows 98se provided you get the
right
drivers for the modem.
TalkTalk are the worst ISP in the UK bar none but if you can get across to
the morons in tech support that you are using
Windows 98se they will eventually send you another installation CD which
works. The supplied installation CD is for XP only despite what the info on
the CD or tech support say.

W98SE is notorious for USB problems. Either get a modem that has a serial
port or move to another operating system.

SERIAL port..? Don't you mean Ethernet..? I've never seen a broadband
modem with an RS232 port..!

Although I do regret the demise of RS232 from the newer generation of
computers.......

It worked fine with WinME for my mother-in-law.

Also their Tech Support team were able to solve some problems she had
a few weeks later (I admit I was surprised at that, but hey,
occasionally it happens!)

Have you seen Ethernet ADSL modems in use in the UK? They're all the
rage in both the US and Hong Kong where the ADSL encapsulation is
generally PPPoE(oA), but I'm not sure you can use one for PPPoA
encapsulation. It's either a USB modem or a router with a built-in
ADSL modem.

Me too, though I guess that's a natural consequence of the fact that
there is less and less stuff to plug a computer's RS232 port into.

In practice you are of course correct! Having said that Ethernet is serial!
