Windows 98SE and red "X" on mapped network drive

On one workstation, I have mapped a network drive to x:\\server\c and asked it to reconnect on startup. In the windows explorer the mapped drive is displayed with a red "X" on the connection. Upon double-clicking this drive, the red "X" disappears and all functions are restored.

While the red "X" is shown, mapped drive is not valid in DOS mode and the shared Internet Connection does not work.

Why is this happening?

Thanks everyone!
