I have installed wireless network adaptors on both my windows XP laptop and
my windows 98 desktop pc. In view available network connections on the
laptop the network we have set up using the network connection wizard comes
up as connected. On the desktop PC the software that came with the adaptor
picks up the network and says it is connected to it soboth computers say they
are connected. However when I look in network neighbourhood and network
places they both only show the computer that I am currently on and not the
computer on the network like it would if the network was connected.

Please Help Me
Brian

There is a difference between being connected and being able to see the
other computers on the network. Being able to see the other computers is
called browsing. It sounds like you are connected but unable to browse the
network. This article may be helpful.

The thing is I don't think I'm connected because when I type "\\"then the
other computers name it doesn't recognise the other computer. Also I got it
working a week ago but it stopped working an hour later and have not been
able to get it working again.

Is your connection Ad Hoc? (no access point) or are you using an Access
point?

Have you checked the IP addresses of your wireless adapters to see if the
two computers are on the same network? If you're not sure how to do that,
report back the IP address of each computer and the subnet mask. Are these
addresses manually assigned or is one computer acting as a DHP server?

To see the IP addresses do this:

WinXP: Go to Start, Run and type: cmd Click OK
At the command prompt, type: ipconfig /all
This will show you the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, etc.

Win98: Go to Start, Run and type: winipcfg Click OK
Use the drop down arrow to view the settings for your wireless adapter. By
default, it will show the PPP adapter (modem) and if you are not connected
to the Internet via this modem, the addresses will show 0.0.0.0. This is to
be expected and not a problem.

To be on the same network, the subnet mask must match and the numbers that
are masked must match. For instance, if the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
and the IP address of one computer is 192.168.0.1 then the IP address of all
other computers on the network must start with 192.168.0. and the last
number must be different any other (and be between 1 and 254) since each
must have a unique address.

This article should be helpful:

It's nice to see you here, Patty! I wrote that article a few years
ago and had forgotten about it. Thanks for the reminder. :-)

It's a little out of date, because it doesn't mention the Windows
Firewall in XP SP2.
