Windows 98 WIFI tips needed

I have an IBM 600E laptop with Windows 98 Standard Edition installed on it,
and a Netgear MA401 Adapter card. It generally connects fine to access
points, and I am usually able to get on the internet. However, I have
noticed that it sometimes has difficulty accessing the internet after
"connecting" to linksys SSID's. If I run winipcfg when this happens usually
I will find that the lease expiration time is right now, with the lease
obtained date being 24 hours earlier. So in other words the lease is expired
and I can't get on the internet. I imagine that this is something to do with
being Windows 98. I have seen some things about changing registry settings
to make Windows 98 work properly for wireless use. Are there some general
tips for using Windows 98 on WIFI that might address this issue?

Thanks,

Gary

Hmm, no one answered. (Where have all the network gurus gone?)
Some of these might help:
http://support.microsoft.com/search/...ion+lease&adv=

And for general networking, the master information post {constantly
modified}[not all will apply]:

PURSUANT a previous wifi discussion; NOT related to your specific problem
though of future potential use:

Yes, it does appear you have issues concerning your wireless. Try moving
things around, making sure no NEON lights, or high energy electric
interference, or metal mass, is causing the problem.

I once diagnosed a wireless setup, in which the transceiver had been moved
closer the cash register which caused intermittent interference.
Another in which the base transceiver and computer were moved next to the
utility room with all the electric feeds, which caused a dead zone, though
it could also have been the massive amount of metal utilities boxes.
Another in which a "cell phone blanker" had apparently been illegally setup
in a business next door [yeah, I know, should have made no difference, but
it did].
And another in which the base transceiver had been moved merely a few feet
after original setup, and it caused interference and network loss [likely
related to ducting or other metallic interference].

The short is: check WHERE your setting this computer up for potential
network issues.

FOR OTHER INFO [the shotgun approach to answering potential issues, not all
of these may apply]:

CHECK:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies\Networ
k

SHARING FILES Win98
On Win98 select "share level access" to share your files. If you select
"user level access", you need another machine on the network (like winNT) to
provide a user list since win98 can't provide its own. With share level
access you just use a password if you want to restrict access.
IF your LAN/Wan has such, make sure both are properly configured.

ADDRESSING ISSUES
If your using ICS AND a LAN/WAN, remember you must have two different
address ranges, EXAMPLE: 198.162.0.*; 198.162.1.* - EXAMPLE: 10.0.0.2 mask
255.0.0.0; 192.168.1.2 mask 255.255.255.0.

PORTS REQUIRED CONFIGURED IN FIREWALL
Generally there are "ports" consider necessary for full connections, 60, 80,
137 - 139, 445; though other ports may need opened or configured for certain
setups.

REMOTE DESKTOP
There is some troubleshooting help on this page...
http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.or...eshooting.html
Make sure you have TCP Port 3389 open on any software firewalls you may have
running on the machine. Some folks report NAV worm protection and OneCare
Live block TCP Port 3389 if not configured correctly. Also, if your running
a Cisco VPN client some folks report issues with that.

ENCRYPTION ISSUES
Do you have the encryption key for the network, and have you configured
your wireless adapter with the right encryption type and the right key?
Recheck the configuration, this can be hard at times to properly configure.

CABLING CAT5/6
Yeah, you have to buy components that are compatible with CAT6.
If you are not experience in crimping Do Not crimp. Buy Keystone jacks and
punch the end of the cables to the keystones.
From the keystones to the computers, or switches, use commercially made
patches.
This page explains the principle, it is Not updated for CAT6 but the

DUN verses networking issues
This procedure can fix strange problems with Windows 98 TCP/IP. Is this what
you tried?
1. Un-install Internet Connection Sharing (if installed).
2. Un-install Dial-Up Networking. Don't reboot.
3. Delete registry key HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
4. Re-install Dial-Up Networking. Reboot.
5. Re-install Internet Connection Sharing (if desired).

BASIC ICS AND NETWORKING
The following pages were written by me ages ago. Ignore the prices, and the
specific choice of hardware, stick with the principles they are still the
same.

Did you check the installation and every thing concerning network's hardware
and settings looks OK ( http://www.ezlan.net/debug.html)

--------

As for a firewall: numerous people have thought they either have no
firewall [which they do if using XP, particularly SP2], or have disabled or
THOUGHT they uninstalled all of them during attempts to diagnose network
issues.
Security Suites generally install their own, Anti-virus progs sometimes
have their version, and even the wireless and router install programs may
include its own version. Check what is running by using a monitoring program
such as process explorer, regmon, or filemon by sysinternals on the Win98
computer, recheck the XP and servers, and make absolutely sure there is none
conflicting/blocking access.

I found something in the above link that accurately expresses the problem I
am having:

DHCP Lease Time Is Set to Current Time When Lease Renewal Fails

It explains how to solve the problem in Windows XP by installing the latest
service pack.
Would anyone know the fix for Windows 98 FE?

Thanks for the comprehensive links. I will use them.

Gary

You can get Windows 98 to Release DHCP Lease Information at Shutdown.

Jim-

Thanks. I might give this a try. Normally I am able to connect to WAP's OK.
But sometimes I will get one that
causes the DHCP lease expiration time to be set to current time.

1) Is it generally better to Release DHCP Lease Information at Shutdown? Do
newer operating systems do this by default?
2) In the registry fix it says -" The first value (ReleaseLeaseOnShutdown)
is not present by default and must be added"
I know how to access the registry address, but I'm not sure what to click on
to add a value.

Thanks,

Gary

I don't think it matters.

I don't think so.

Run regedit, go to the correct key and right click on the right side
of the screen. Select New -> DWord Value and New -> String Value.
