NetBIOS isn't a protocol like TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, and NetBEUI. It's an
applications programming interface that runs over one of the
protocols. All file sharing between Windows 95/98/XP requires
NetBIOS.
Nothing in Windows networking requires the NetBEUI protocol. It's OK
to use it, but it's never necessary, and it's un-supported in Windows
XP. That means that it's available in Windows XP, but Microsoft
recommends not using it and won't give technical support on it.
If a network doesn't work using TCP/IP but works after adding NetBEUI,
something is wrong with the TCP/IP configuration.
