We have a workgroup of 7 machines. Machines use 95, 98 and
XP. The XP machines cannot see the 98 machine. The 95
machine can see all machines but cannot access the 98
machine. The 98 machine sees no machines. Folders are
shared on all machines. Does anyone have any ideas here?

I have access set for both drives on the Win 98 machine

I assume all have same workgroup name ...what protocols are used for file
sharing...

I know Steve doesn't always agree with this but making sure Netbeui is

NetBIOS isn't a protocol like TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, and NetBEUI. It's an
applications programming interface that runs over one of the
protocols. All file sharing between Windows 95/98/XP requires
NetBIOS.

Nothing in Windows networking requires the NetBEUI protocol. It's OK
to use it, but it's never necessary, and it's un-supported in Windows
XP. That means that it's available in Windows XP, but Microsoft
recommends not using it and won't give technical support on it.

If a network doesn't work using TCP/IP but works after adding NetBEUI,
something is wrong with the TCP/IP configuration.

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...c_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/..._protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

Steve, Im curious about your take on NETBEUI. I have my
LAN set up with TCP/IP and NETBEUI. TCP/IP is unbound from
File and Printer sharing and NETBEUI is bound .. my
understanding was that this seperated the local network
from the internet functions and enhanced my security. At
least thats the way I understood it from Steve Gibsons
site (grc.com).
Are you saying this is a flawed way of doing it, or are
you saying the approach is OK, but I should use a
supported protocol like IPX in lieu of Netbeui ?

Regards, Stephan
