Windows 98 Networking - Network/Printer Connection Issues - Help!

Hello:

I'm getting a bit frustrated with getting Networking/Printer Sharing
working reliably on a small home wireless network. Admittedly, I'm a
bit green here, and have seached the web and these newsgroups and have
not yet found a coherent solution to my experienced problems!

Here's the situation:

Machine 1:
Win ME, several shared folders, HP1120c shared printer. Dlink Wireless
Card

Machine 2:
Win98, no shared resources, Dlink Wireless Card.

Both machines work quite well independently. Internet connections, etc
operate just fine.

When I try to access the printer (on mach1 from mach2), mach2 locks up.
I usally get a printer window, but all that appears in the Title bar
is the printer icon with not details of the printer, and a 'stuck'
hourglass. Bringing up the TaskManager shows that 'RunDll32' is 'not
responding'.

Earlier in the process, when I would try to 'Add Printer' in the
Control Panel this machine (2) would lock up. I believe I got the
printer icon to appear in my printers folder by installing the printer
via the .exe driver provided by HP.

Also, when I connect (from mach2 to mach1) to a shared folder,
connection is intermittent - that is (sometimes) I can get to the
folder, but as I traverse through it, the machine (2) locks up.

Pinging either machine from the other seems to work fine.

While I am open to trying any recommendations, I would like to
understand the setup I require on each machine. I have Netbeui on each
machine and the TCP/IP protocols. There are many network components
installed on each machine (Netbeui and TCP/IP for the wireless card in
the respective machines, but I also see components connected to 'Dial
up' adapters and AOL adapters). Do I need all of these? What is the
minimum of these I need to have a functioning system?

I've consulted the 'Windows 98 Secrets' book for help but have ended up
in this situation!

Thanks in advance for your help!
Tomcee

I'm sure someone else will jump in ...but , remove netbeui , it is not
needed ..and having more than 1 protocol installed sometimes causes what you
are describing.

let us know if this helped ...post back with update :>

Thanks for the quick note.

So, you are saying I should remove all of the Netbeui components. I
will try that.

I will be left with:
TCP/IP->AOL adaptor
TCP/IP->AOL dial up adaptor
TCP/IP->Dlink DWL520(my wireless card)
TCP/IP->Dial Up Adaptor
TCP/IP->Dial Up Adaptor #2(VPN Support) (I connect to this machine from
a business XP machine)

I am assuming that I should only leave the link to my wireless card and
the VPN support? Or is it acceptable to leave all of these TCP/IP
components? I also assume that the AOL ones are only for using the AOL
software (which I have long since stopped using).

Thanks,
Tom

Tom,

if you are not using the referenced AOL entries ...go ahead and get rid of
them ..

I wouldn't worry about the other dialup's...

Netbeui has never really been required and *may* cause conflict with other
protocols installed ..so i asked you to remove it to see if that may be
interferring.

I assume you are using a "router" "access point" hopefully with NAT built
in to protect file sharing with TCP/IP ?
"file a printer sharing" is on ...so if you don't have NAT you should have a
firewall of some kind

sounds like ME is the origin ...have a read here to see if any of the
suggestions apply to you

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=128345

let us know ...I may not be back right away ..but there is always someone
lurking with good suggestions :>

Ok,

I've removed all Netbeui references and the 'intermittency' still
exists!!

All I've got is the TCP/IP connections and the 802.1x for the wireless
card.

To review:
I can map to a drive on the ME machine. I can connect to folders
within this drive, but when trying to access a file on this machine
(whether from windows or a command window), access seems to work unless
the access is a rather large one (i.e. 'dir' will work, but type
<larger file> causes the network connection to lock up. Also, trying
to see the printer on the Me machine causes lockup.

Any other ideas? I would really like to understand and repair this
problem,
TIA,
Tomcee

Haggis is right about Netbeui but instead you want to unbind them.
This is so they can only been seen inside your network and not become a
security problem on the internet.
What the problem is that Netbeui is Binded so it can be seen not only on
your Network, but over the Internet by default that is a Security Issue and
is why you have to unbind them.

It's been a long time since I've done that so I'll leave it to someone that
can give you better info on that.

Shields-up Has a good page on how to do this but also search the MS
Knowledge Base on how to unbind the Netbeui.

Here' what I found in a search:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/232511/en-us

I can't find the one on how to unbind it but the above has some good info.
Can anyone post the Link for Unbinding the Netbui?

Kevin
