I have both a Windows XP and Windows 98 machine connected through Cat5
to a Netgear MR814v2 router. My DSL modem is also connected to the
router.

The Windows XP box can connect to the Internet, ping the router, and
everything is great.

The Windows 98 box cannot even ping the router even though all the
network settings look fine (ie the client, adapter, and protocol are
fine). I've tried removing all the network components, rebooting, and
letting Win 98 redected everything. No luck.

Clicking "Renew" in winipcfg gives the error:
DHCP Server Unavailable Renewing adapter ""

Does anyoe have any thoughts? Thanks.

Something is preventing the Windows 98 box from communicating with the
router.

It could be a bad network card, cable, or router port.

It's possible that the network card is configured to automatically
sense the right speed and duplex settings but is failing to do it.
Try explicitly configuring it for 100 Mb, full duplex, as shown here:

Thanks for the response.

My problem was home-made network cables. The eight wires were
not pushed far enough into the RJ45 plugs so the connection with
the plug was intermittent.

I chopped off the bad plugs and crimped on some new ones. All
my problems got resolved.
