Hi experts,
I've told some people I would take a look at thier
computers since they were both having the same problems.
They are both connnecting to Yahoo DSL and cannot get
internet connectivity to work. I can't figure out what
the problem is. There are a bunch of entries for network
adapters in the network places --> Properties --> tcp/ip.
I don't have DSL and I'm not sure why they would need so
many. They have entries for two ethernet adapters, a PPP
adapter, dial-up adapters and MS client adapters. I've
disabled them, done ipconfig /release_all on the one I'm
testing with and it won't release. I thought it might be
a virus, so I ran norton's (2002) virus scan (since I
couldn't get to thier site)but that came back negative.
Also checked all the startup items and they are clean Plus
I've seen this kind of thing on W2K and XP, but I
thought '98 was unaffected by the slammer worm, etc. I'm
at a complete loss. Could the fact that I'm trying to
connect through a cable modem and they go through Yahoo
DSL have any effect? I got an IP address from my provider
on my laptop and then configured it as a static IP for the
machine (then switched over the ethernet cord of course,
which works since I have no problem getting out). Set the
DNS and the default gateway to my ISP's as well. can't
connect anywhere but do get a link light between the
computer and my cable modem. no ping, no tracert, no
ipconfig /release 3, no nothing. Any ideas? any help
would be much appreciated, and I will give you full credit:-
) thanks.
