Racked my brain for an hour over this one...
my network is an NT network.
We have one room that is a computer lab for students. The computer
teacher has an XP computer with share folders for the students work to
be saved on. (rather than saving it locally, which is a good idea).
Problem with XP sharing is that it only allows 10 at a time to be in a
shared folder. So, knowing 98 allows as many as you like, I setup a
fresh windows 98 system and put all his folders and files on it that he
wishes his students to access on it.

I renamed it to the name of his existing XP machine and also renamed
his xp machine.

Here is the problem; now, the classroom cant access these shares on the
98 system (even though they are shared and full access has been given
to each user and "the world" to cover all my bases). Yet, if I, an
administrator, log on ot the same student computer, I can access the
shared files on the 98 system just fine.

Why does 98 all of the sudden only allow admins to access shared
folders when these students could access them fine when they were on an
XP system?
thanks in advance!
Jazz Mann

I guess the students computers are really looking for the IP address of
the XP machine that once served as the server...?

Your basic problem is that you're trying everything you can think of to
avoid buying a server OS when you need one ...

You are right and wrong..., but nice smart @$$ answer...
We have server OS and licenses... but yes, im trying to figure out a
way to do it without using my exisiting server space, without buying a
new server, and without installing my server OS...

If you arent smart enough to answer the question, save internet space
and keep your paper-only-cert mouth shut.

Concurrent connections.

win9x - 10
winxp home - 5
winxp pro - 10
nt workstation - 10

You will be no better off with win98 than xppro

fixed it myself! thanks for the encouragement.
Turned out the log on accounts of those student machines on my PDC
allowed them to only log on to that specific machine they would work on
in the lab.
I added the 98 machine's name to that list of allowed machines they can
log on to, and it works!

I am now BETTER off than I was with winxp pro (since it only allowed 10
users in a share folder). I tested it and all 25 computers can get into
the share folder no problem! You must have bad information. Windows 98
has a default of 100... maybe that question wasnt on the test-king
sheet.

Too bad your paper-certs are good for nothing but pretty wall
decoration in your room.
