Hi;

Probably a silly question, but are there any limitations on installing
wireless internet access on my home PC - it's an old machine, an AMD 400
with 64Mb RAM and W98SE. It connects via a cable modem fine at present (as
you can see!). Any probs with going wireless?

Davey

Go to vendor sites such as linksys, netgear, dlink, etc and read their
system requirements. I think most would be compatable with your system as
you described. But it is difficult to be certain as we do not know what
else you have installed that is using system resources.

Thanks Bob, I haven't got anything much (antivirus, zonealarm on the
software front; nothing other than the normal clone PC stuff and a CD writer
on the hardware), so sounds like it should be okay - I wouldn't even have
asked, but a couple of years ago I installed a USB PCI card, and it's
stalwartly refused to work for 90% of the time ever since.

oh - okay, there's a USB PCI card in there as well (duh!!)

I'll take a good look at the requirements first.

I'm using W98SE on an AMD 300 (P1), 64 MB notebook and it works. A
little sluggish ofcourse, but i didn't notice a big difference with
using a 10MB card.

I suppose the question is whether a WiFi driver uses more CPU|RAM
resources than a normal driver. It might if the WEP encryption isn't
done on the card, i'm not sure.

I was going to go wireless on a Win98 (not SE) machine. I was unable to find
any wireless cards that were supported under Win98. So, unless you can
upgrade to SE (MS doesn't appear to sell these upgrades anymore), ME or
change to W2000 (best bet for an older machine as opposed to XP) I think
you're out of luck.

You might look into Belkin. My wife has an older laptop that is Win98
(Not SE) and the Belkin pcmcia card worked fine. Not sure if a
desktop would be the same situation but worth a peek perhaps.

2 Kings 2:23-25 Elisha left Jericho and went up to Bethel.
As he was walking along the road, a group of boys from the
town began mocking and making fun of him. "Go away, you
baldhead!" they chanted. "Go away, you baldhead!" Elisha
turned around and looked at them, and he cursed them in
the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods
and mauled forty-two of them. From there Elisha went to
Mount Carmel and finally returned to Samaria.

Bob; I am actually running SE, so should not be a problem.

But there's plenty of "SE" out there, if you need it and look......... (and
have broadband ;-))

My laptop is Win98 first edition, and I used a D-Ling 650+. Old laptop, 150
MHz, and I had to upgrade from Win95 which was NOT supported.
