Windows 98 5/11/98 version intermittently cannot locate DHCP

I have Windows 98 upgrade with version date of 5/11/98. I
have a problem where I get an error of being unable to
locate DHCP Server and have trouble connecting to the
Internet. This happens almost daily. It sounds like it
is a problem with the vdhcp.386 file as described in
article 194790 but Microsoft no longer supports this
version without paying a $35 fee. It suggests I should
have file vdhcp.386 version 4.10.2012.

Has anyone found a different solution to this or knows how
to get this fix without the $35 fee?

- Is your PC connected to a network?
- Do you have a DHCP server?
- If yes, what sort of a server is it?
- If no, why do you specify DHCP?
