Windows 3.1 on network

I have a customer with a network using Windows Server 2003 Std Edition.
They have an old computer running Windows 3.1 that they claim used to
be on the network where they could access files on the server..it looks
like it was at one time hooked up to the server because I found mapped
drives to the server listed in the Network properties. They want to
eliminate this PC but need to get a database of records printed.

The computer is not listed in the domain on the server (it's name is
"Scanner"). The network runs DHCP. I cannot figure out how to get this
computer on the network because I know nothing about Windows 3.1 other
than a few NET commands that were not helpful.

Secondly, they want this computer to print to a network-based printer
(connected via Ethernet connection to switch).

Questions:

1. Is it possible to have a 3.1 computer on this network for file
sharing from the server?
2. If so, do I need to add it to the domain, like any other computer?
3. Should it be able to print to the printer?

Thanks!

Make your life easy: hook up a local printer and print your database of
records

Have already considered that and it may become Plan B, but would like
to use the very fast laser printer (not your typical workgoup printer)
they already have as there are thousands of records to print.

Need someone to reply that can answer the questions. Thanks anyway.

Windows 3.1 is a "simple DOS client". You might want to try this:
net use LPT1 \\<printserver>\<Printerque>

Then try to print to LPT1. You cannot do any formatting, i gues, but
the data will be printed.

Good luck with the old times!

Hi

I think this would help you.

Windows 3.1 can not be part of any Microsoft Domain. (3.11 does)
