Hello,

I'm trying to configure time synchronization in a Windows 2003
Standard Server. My server is not in a domain, and it should
synchronize from a NTPserver (not in Internet).

How should I configure it?
net stop w32time

1. Group Policy Object Editor, gpedit.msg
(Computer Configuration\Administrative Template\System\Windows Time
Server);

2. Using RegEdit (HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Pa rameters);

3. Internet Time (Start\Control Panel\Date and Time\Internet Time); or

4. net time /SETSNTP:ntpserver
and net start w32time?

I doesn't seem to work as good as the w2k version!

For testing I have set the local clock ahead in 2 minutes and
monitored with
w32tm /monitor /computers:ntpserver

I could see that the offset was slowly decreasing, I mean, the local
clock was slower than normal, nice. But when it was 0 (offset), it
didn't start working faster. It was still slower, and was then behind
the local time. Then after some minutes the clock start working
faster. Then the clock was ahead, then it was slower, then the clock
is behing and faster... a never ending story. Help!

I don't want a such a complex time synchronization method that doens't
work. I just want to have the clock synchronized!

Help, what should I do?

Thank you!
Ramon

Ramon:

The time service on Windows is not intuitive to use at all, particularly
when setting up the time source in a domain. Anyway, since you have a stand
alone server, just go to
http://www.boulder.nist.gov/timefreq/service/its.htm or a similar site and
download the time sync apps they have. It's an extra app to run, but
shouldn't take up much resources.

Regards,
Martin

Hello Martin,

thank you for your help. But I would like to use a standard Microsoft tool.

Regards,
Ramon
