Hello There,

Firstly many thanks for the person who guides me in the proper direction in
this one.
I have two Win 2003 SP1 (one is the main DC and the other the third DC in
ranking), everything has been working fine until the updates from July, after
rebooting it took an hour in the screen "preparing network connections" and
when I got to the logon screen and logged on as the administrator it took two
hours in the screen "Applying computer settings", I cannot start or stop any
service in "Normal Mode" but it is Ok in "Safe Mode", the "Network
Connections" service did not start et all and cannot access the "Network
Connections" in the control panel since nothing happens and appears frozen,
my backup does the same thing, he weird thing is that mopst porograms worked
except the ones that depend on the network connections like the antivirus.
The errors are not many but none can tell what is going on:

"Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Writer with name WMI Writer and ID
{a6ad56c2-b509-4e6c-bb19-49d8f43532f0} attempted to subscribe in safe mode."

"DCOM got error "This service cannot be started in Safe Mode " attempting to
start the service EventSystem with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{1BE1F766-5536-11D1-B726-00C04FB926AF}"

I tried to reinstall the IP stack but could not due to doing it in safe
mode, I uninstalled the "Client for Microsoft" service and now I have
Kerberos erros since I cannot reinstall in safe mode, I will transfer FSMO
services to my second DC that it is working fine but most of my data in DNS
is in the first DC.
Please help, Can I reinstall over the same copy of win 2003 or that noit
recommended since they are DC and cannot demote then since the GUI Dcpromo
does not work?
Thanks for any help

Try:

1. Restart, F8, Last Known Good.

2. If #1 doesn't work, boot into safe mode and uninstall the July updates.
They can easily be identified by looking at the dates of the $NtUnistall ...
folders in your WINDOWS directory.

3. If #2 doesn't work, perform a repair install of Windows. This 'should'
not affect your Active Directory installation - boot to the CD, select to
install Windows, if setup can find the existing installation, you will have
the option to select Repair.

any errors in the event viewer? or use netdiag and dcdiag to check any errors. I would transfer all FSMO and GC roles to the second DC, and perhaps DNS. Make the DC work first and then do the troubleshooting other DC.

Hey Doug,

Thanks for the troubleshooting, yes I have uninstall the July updates and
reinstall SP1 (all in Safe Mode), the Last Known Good will not work because
it starts fine but something is not right, when I run DCDiag everything tests
OK and Netdiag does run sometimes with no errors in the first DC but does not
run in the second DC, the other funny thing is the second DC has SP1 and July
updates but no problems and hardware is different 1DC - IBM, 2DC - Dell, 3DC
- Compaq.
Now if I use the repair option then I have the system state in a DDS
cartridge (in the third DC) which may not be available in the repair option
since the drivers do not get loaded and the 1DC has a DLT backup unit running
with a RAID card, could I load the original system state and what will be the
consequenses from that since the drivers are RAID, also I run a database
which runs Visual Fox Pro with a lot of info since I am the network adminfor
a 700 student school.
Again Thanks a lot for the answers

A repair install does not require you to reinstall Active Directory or
perform a system state restore - your machine should come back up as a DC
with the OS effectively having no updates applied. However, you may have to
reinstall drivers. If necessary, RAID drivers can usually be installed by
pressing F6 during setup.
