Windows 2003 - Printproblem With Windows 95

I have a Windows 2003 SBS Server. On this server a couple of networkprinters
are shared (Standard TCP:IP Port).
Connected to the server are some Windows 2000 PC's, some XP's and some 95's.

For more than one month I had not problem at all printing from all the PC's
to the printers on the server.

Now, all of a sudden I can't print from any Windows 95 to any of the shared
printers.
I have no problem with the Windows 2000 or XP PC's.

I restarted the server, the PC's, reinstalled the printers on the server, on
the PC's. Nothing helps.

On the server I can see in the printerscreen that the printed file is
shortly spooled. Then it disappears. In the eventlog I can see
"Document 84, Remote Downlevel Document owned by BCV was deleted on HP
LaserJet 4M Plus - IT."

On the 95 I get an error:
"Error writing to \\server\printport. There was a problem printing due to an
unknown systemerror"

The only solution I see is sharing the printers on another (Windows 2000)
PC. This works, but this is no real solution...
Anyone any ideas?

Marc

Open the Local Security Policy on the Windows 2003 Server and go to security
settings/local policies/security options and find the setting for Microsoft network
server: digitally sign communications(always) and set it to disabled. The run
Gpupdate /force on the server to see if that helps. -- Steve

OK. What may help is to try enabling auditing of logon events in the Local Security
Policy of the server and look for failed logons that match the time you have problems
accessing it. It may provide a clue. Otherwise I would look at more security options
as described in the KB link below that can cause problems accessing due to operating
system incompatibles. The option to include anonymous in the everyone group, you may
want to enable if it is not already to see if it helps and review the lanmanager
authentication level to make sure it is not set to refuse lm authentication. You may
also want to try and install the Directory Services Client on the W95 computers. --

I had a similar problem on a Windows 2000 SBS. The
solution was to change the port configuration from RAW to
LPR.

Hi Steven,

Thanks for the hint!
It solved my problem where I could not to connect to my 2003 server with a
DOS-diskette with the lanmanager client. I use network connections like this
to make Ghost-image backups of my pc's on the server.

Best regards, Geert.
