hi,
it depends -how many sites do you have?
for only one site both must have dns and must be global catalog, in case of
failure you will have to move some roles to the backup.
if you have more sites depends of roles and site replication topologie.

hi,
on backup server instal dns server, run dcpromo with new domain cotroller on
existing domain. After you promoted as domain controller go to active
directory sites and services ,NTDS settings on backup server check the Global
Catalog.
On clients on secundary DNS put the IP of the backup server. If you have a
dhcp there you could simply add on dhcp that, if the dhcp is on the main
domain controller then on backup server install dhcp server and put all the
settings like main domain controller and split the scope of principal
according with the the rule 80-20 wich means leave 80% of IPs on main server
and put 20% IPs on backup server.

hi,
i really don't understand why to do that, the second scope is so big? why
you don't use the second as 10.5.0.0/24? or if you really need so big on the
first scope you have to do some exclusions.

I just wanted to ask a quick question as I have a similar situation
with W2K as PDC and W2K3 as a member server. Will we need the same or
more number of licenses on the second BDC? The 2003 server is running
Terminal Services for a LOB application, do we need to consider
anything in this regard before promoting to BDC?

Thanks

hi,
for security reason it's good to promote a Terminal Server as a domain
controller.
