Windows 2003 and Buffalo Linkstation - slow network neighborhood

Hi there,

I got the following problem with my Buffalo Linkstation 160gb: it is
integrated into a pure windows 2000 network, based on a Workgroup, no
Wins Server and no Active Directory, just a Workgroup with Windows 2000
Systems. Now, I have to upgrade the Windows 2000 Server with Windows
2003 Server, also without AD and without Wins.

The problem is as following: the linkstation is used as a backup
device. The Server should save some files on it. But the Access to the
Linkstation from the Windows 2003 server is extremely slow in Network
neighborhood. Before, with Windows 2000, everything was ok and ran very
smooth, but now, it takes about 30 sec. to see the contents of any
folder on the linkstation. Before, directory browsing was really quick.
I tried to resolve this issue with Wins, with an entry into the Lmhost
file, different Master Browser Settings on the Windows 2003 server, but
nothing helped.

Some relief was noticed, when disabling the printer function on the
linkstation, but however, I need the network printer conencted with the
linkstation. Also, the lookup in windows 2003 for network task is
disabled, also for network printers.

The Firmware is v1.48, DHCP is disabled because of some important
reasons.

Maybe, there is a fix for this or an unofficial firmware which resolves
this issue. Without having fast access to the linkstation, upgrading my
network wont happen.

Please have someone a look onto this issue, maybe someone can help.

Steve

I've seen this without SP1. It can also be due to SMB Signing (easily turned
off in the local Sec Policy). However, need more info, which you can
probably answer yourself by seeing if these articles apply. Keep in mind, if
it says Win2000, or a domain controller, it probably also applies to 2003
whether a DC or not:

822219 - You experience slow file server performance and delays occur when
you work with files that are located on a file server:

thx, I will have a look onto these articles.

Some hints, I discovered in the meantime: smb signing is a hot
candidate for that malfunction: on the linkstation, samba 2 is running,
but however, I will install that 2003 server, installing win2k now
would be easier but not future proof.
