I have a Windows 2000 server (Finance) on my domain. I have a Windows 2003
server as my main server. All users are authenicated through the 2003 server.
My domain has about 20 PC's on the lan. Only three of the 20 users share
folders on the finance server. This has worked fine for over a year. A
couple of days ago, I attempted to connect an additional Windows 2000 server
on the lan. When I did this, the 3 PC accessing the finance server lost
access. I took the new server off and that did not fix the problem.
Currently, when the finance server is logged in, ALL users cannot access the
internet and the users cannot access the finance server. When I log off the
finance server, everyone works fine.

The finance server is also putting controller errors in the event log.

Does anyone have any suggestions, before we purchase another server.

Hi,

You mentioned that you have errors in event logs. Can you post these errors?
It will probably help determining what the problem is. Can you also check
other event logs (System, Application, ...)

What else is running on this server? DNS? Active Directory?

There is nothing on that server except the financial software. DNS and Active
Directory are both running on the main server - windows 2003. At this point,
I can't even log the server on under the admin login using the password. I
have to use the admin login and password for the main server.

The error message is "PERC 3/Di Controller 0 , battery needs reconditioning."

The error that you posted can not influence the other parts of the network.
It only means that you have to replace the battery on the HDD controller.

When you experience these problems on the network, can you resolve the hosts
on the internet e.g. if you run

nslookup www.cnn.com

or

nslookup www.google.com

what do you get? Can you browse the internet by using IP addresses e.g.

http://66.102.9.99

when you experience the problems on the network?

Are there any other errors on e.g. domain controller and on client
computers?

When this happens we get no errors on the domain controller or workstations,
other than the "server not found" when trying to connect to the internet.
This problem goes away as soon as I turn off the finance server.

We also cannot resolve any hosts on the internet. When we get on the
internet, we type in the domain name and not the ip, e.g. www.cnn.com.

But if you use IP, does it work?

Did you check Application and System logs on the client and on the server?

What DNS server does your clients use for preferred DNS (this setting is
under TCP/IP properties)?
