Windows 2000 server & router / switch

I have a small office network on 2 levels.
1 PC running Windows 2000 server, rest running Windows 2000 Pro apart from 1
PC running ME.
Server PC using DHCP, all PC's connected via a 2 switches.
Have recently installed an ADSL modem/router to 1 single PC, router has a
built in switch.

My question is can I replace 1 of the switches with the router & use DHCP
via the router, so all PC's are networked & have ADSL access.
Would also mean connecting a switch into the router.
Do I need to demote the server from DHCP?

Thank you

This "router" is actually a NAT Device or a NAT Firewall. Anyway, yes, you
could either replace one switch with the NAT Devie or you could link it to
one of the switches and use all three.

Promoting/Demoting has to do with making the Server a Domain Controller or
not. That has nothing to do with DHCP. But, anyway,..leave the server alone
and disable the DHCP ability on the NAT Device. Make sure the NAT Device is
configured properly for you LAN's Address range, they often default to
192.168.1.x, which may not be what you are using on the LAN.

I assume the existing switches are linked together - ie. you have one
physical network segment serviced by 2 linked switches, all on the same
logical subnet. In this case, the answer to both questions is YES:

1. You can link a switch to the router's builtin switch in the same manner
that you link standard switches. If the router does not have a designated
uplink port, just use any of its LAN ports.

2. If you enable DHCP on the router, then you must disable DHCP on the
server.

You don't need to change DHCP to the router (and probably shouldn't)
nor do you need to really do much moving. Plug your current switch
into the broadband router/switch, set your server DHCP to hand out the
router's internal IP as the default gateway.
