I am trying to logon a windows 2000 pro workstaion locally. In fact, it
keeps coming up an error msg:

"The system cannot log you on now because the domain PCname123 is not
avaiable."

Well~ it was ok to logon to the domain (2003 AD). Somehow just drop off the
connection. And all I want to do it's logon to local box NOT the
domain/network. What is this telling me?

Could someone help?

Hi,

To logon locally under username enter local user account (e.g.
administrator). Under password enter password for _local_ user account
(domain passwords won't work for this) Under "Logon to" drop down menu
select name of your local computer. Next to the name it will be a text "This
Computer" e.g. "Mike (this computer)"

If you don't have this option that would display "this computer" then
specific computer is a domain controller.

Once you are logged on, check the computer's DNS settings under TCP/IP. DNS
should point to Active Directory DNS (probably IP of your Active Directory
server?). If you have some other DNS set under TCP/IP (e.g. ISP's DNS) your
client won't be able to find domain (Active Directory).

I hope this helps,

Mike

Thank you Miha.

This PC used to working when I logged on as local administrator -
administrator (this computer).
So I did try the steps you listed below, and didn't work.
I really want to be able to logon locally so that I can check the DNS etc.

When I turned on the machine, it showed "Windows is starting up......" and
this would take around 5 mins.
Next, it appears "Preparing network connections....", this takes longer time
about 10 mins.

Any ideas?

Try booting in safe mode (safe mode with networking).

Here is how if you need help. Restart computer and before computer starts
loading Windows press F8. You will have a menu to choose from (e.g. Safe
Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, VGA Mode, ...)
