I have been have been trying to use my Win2k Laptop in a WPA wireless
environment.
The broadband network utility does not show WPA as a security option.
I tried McAfee wireless security and it says that the wireless card I
have does not support
WPA.

However the tech specs from microsoft state that it does support WPA.

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...MN-520FY04.pdf

I've looked around for a firmware/driver/software upgrade but with no
luck.
Help?

The wireless card you have does not support WPA. You'll need to use WEP
with that card.

The fact that you are on win2k means that you need additional software to
support WPA.

I *thought* the MN-520 would support WPA, but that functionality won't be
exposed through the MSBNU software at all (due to the lack of built in WPA
support in Win2k)

What you'll need
i) 3rd party WPA supplicant
ii) the latest drivers for the MN-520 (available at
http://support.microsoft.com/msbbn)
You would have to configure this manaully.

The MN-520 does support WPA after you install the firmware update.
Remember they were all made before WPA was a standard.

So just download the update that adds WPA support from the following link.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814445

You need either the "Manual update" or the "Microsoft Broadband Network
Utility" to install the firmware upgrade for the MN-520. I will warn
you though after installing this update I heard of several people having
problems with their wireless connection. So this may cause new problems
as a warning. I don't have a MN-520 to test it on so I only have what I
heard to go on.

I think Chris H. forgot that this update was released after the MN-700
was released, as it was over a year ago when this firmware update was
released for download.

Please do not contact me directly or ask me to contact you directly for

If your question is worth asking, it's worth posting.

If it’s not worth posting you should have done a search on
http://www.google.com/ http://www.google.com/grphp?hl=en&tab=wg&q= or
http://news.google.com/froogle?hl=en&tab=nf&ned=us&q= before wasting our
time.

If I sound hostile or arrogant you need to read the following before
posting a question "How To Ask Questions The Smart Way" at

to just has this article I think people should read before posting a
technical question.)

Thank you all.. I was quite sure I read the documentation correctly
and that WPA was indeed supported.

I tried the manual update, because I had uninstalled the MSBNU.
It said it couldn't find any components to update and listed a bunch
of cards that it was looking for none of which where the MN-520...
So still no luck.

Did you try the download of the "MSBNSoftware.exe" at this link.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=33104

I think that is your best bet. If it still doesn't work then it is
because the software doesn't think the MN-520 can support WPA. This is
just like a new CD burner not being recognized by burning software as
having burning capability, which is solved by a software update.

Therefore if that doesn't work here are the options I see available to
you, there may be more that I just don't know about though. Get after
McAfee to fix this as it would be their issue of their software not
supporting the MN-520, you could try a search on google to find
something else, or you could upgrade to Windows XP.

Now I'm out of ideas for this issue.
