Hi all,

Has anyone managed to get WinAirSnort to work?

I have tried running it on WinXP, Win2K and Win98 with the Linksys
WPC11 card from the supported hardware list ... so far no luck. The
card works fine and there are no errors from the software, but there
is no packet data recorded either.

Not much reason to run this anymore. Most modern firmware does not generate
the weak WEP keys.

IMHO, the best wireless sniffers run in Linux unless you have lots of $$$
for Windows wireless sniffers. See: http://www.kismetwireless.net

The problem is, although my portable will run Linux just fine, it
can't handle a build environment. My desk is running XP pro for other
reasons. I can't afford another desk for Linux just now.

Do any of the Linux sniffers build/execute under cygwin or similar
environments. I could host cygwin execution on the portable.

It won't handle the build environment? Do you mean you can't get it to
compile right or install right, etc?

If that IS the case, you could also try some good linux liveCD's. Just
boot off the cd and you've got a linux environment.

Try PHLAK (www.phlak.org). It's loaded and up to date with hacker tools,
so I really wouldn't be suprised if it already has some good wireless
snort tools in there (i haven't put a wireless card on my laptop yet, so I
have yet to mess with any wireless stuff on PHLAK).

The portable's a hand me down, executive model - the disk is too small
(5GB, <1 free) to host a decent build environment ( editors, compiler,
libraries, etc. ) in addition to the OS and business suite that I must
keep on it. I had the week off so I took the opportunity to
experiment with a couple of different OS's, but now I have to restore
the original environment.

The cygwin runtimes would not be a problem, but cygwin + GCC + perl or
awk + whatever else is just too much. I could build on the deskop and
run on the portable as long as it's Windoze.
