What currently out of all the Antivirus Progs and/or Spyware Progs protects
against this malware as opposed to removing it?

I apologies if you think it is an inappropriate question for this news
group.

I am in the UK and connect to the internet via broadband and many people
thus doing seem to be having problems with this particular malware. I was
therefore asking the experts in her for advice.

But I will ask elsewhere!

I would have thought that any good (and free) anti-virus program should do
the job.
In my case, I use AVG Free antivirus http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
My anti-spyware comes from Lavasoft (Ad-Aware)
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html
and Spybot
http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/downloa...search-destroy
They're all free and they work.
To remove WinAntivirus see
http://www.xp-vista.com/spyware-remo...l-instructions
Don't forget though - once you've got the above systems up and running, you
need to set the antivirus program to scan and to update daily.
With the anti-spyware programs, you need to update and scan manually
(probably once a week).
Hope that helps

George

Ad-Ware and STILL managed to get infected! He tried all the removal tools
but in the end re formatted.

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSypware Free for Home Users
a.. Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for
installation.
b.. An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to
launch the program.
c.. If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not,
update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If
you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download
and unzip them from here.)
d.. Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
e.. Click the Scanning Control tab.
f.. Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all
others unchecked):
a.. Close browsers before scanning.
b.. Scan for tracking cookies.
c.. Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
g.. Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
h.. Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan
your computer.
i.. On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
j.. On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
k.. Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your
computer.
l.. After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with
potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
m.. Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
n.. A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete".
Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
o.. If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".

Jave update, firewall (windows sp2 is sufficient) and an unwillingness to
say yes to rogue popups will prevent it.

You are quite wrong, AVG, nor norton or mcafee will *remove* winantivirus
pro.

Two specific pieces of software that will get rid of it, smitfraudfix
smitrem.exe, make sure you have the latest version, and have updated the
former.

General software that will also get rid of it, superantispyware and avg
antispyware. Remember to update your java.........

I'm using Bullguard which seems to update itself several times each day
- not free though. One nice thing about Bullguard is that if it detects
but fails to remove something, it offers a direct chat with a bod to
talk you through removing it manually.
