I have a win 98SE network with one XP home machine on it.
Suddenly on several win 98 machines I am getting message
"cant load protocol 1 error 59"
message at boot and I cant see my router,
which is giving out IP addresses and the internet.

Any clues as to what has happened: some machines still
work fine, and I think I can network even to one that
complains (I am guessing because I have NETBui on the
win98 machines)

This can happen the first time you install a NIC or after you restore your
computer.
UnInstall and REINSTALL the NETBeui Protocal and restart. In my experience,
file sharing uses NETBeui.

File sharing can use NetBEUI, but it doesn't have to. Nothing in
Windows networking requires NetBEUI. TCP/IP can handle all Windows
networking tasks.
