Win98SE with NIC and WLAN card

Hello everyone,
I have a problem with my notebook when using a WLAN card to
connect to the internet via my wireless ADSL router
(DrayTek Vigor 2500we). The notebook has a builtin NIC
which is set up for TCP/IP uing a fixed IP to connect to a
LAN. DHCP and DNS are switched off, no gateway is used for
this device, names inside the LAN are resolved via the
"hosts" file.
For the WLAN card TCP/IP is configured to use DHCP (i.e. it
gets it's IP from the ADSL router), as gateway the IP of
the router is entered.
The monitor utility of the WLAN card shows me, the router
and card are connected but when I try to access any web
page most often I can get no connection to the net, not
even names are resolved. In the in the instaling
instructions of the ADSL router is said that for Win98 it
could be neccessary to deactivate the NIC via the device
manager. I did so and from that moment on I am able to
access the internet via the WLAN card/ADSL router without
problems.
I'm not satsfied with that solution since from time to time
I need the NIC to connect to other computers inside my LAN
and I don't like to enable and disable the NIC each time.
Has anybody had similar problems and is there a solution to
this for Win98 ?

Thanks in advance,
Jens

I can't imagine that you need to disable the LAN NIC to use the WLAN
card.

It looks to me like there's a default gateway specified for the LAN
NIC. Enable both network cards, go to a command prompt and enter this
command to see the route table:

route print

A default gateway entry starts with 0.0.0.0. How many of them are
there?

Hi Steve,

I checked the default gateway entry as you wrote and there
is only one entry - the WLAN router. Meanwhile I can
describe my problem more detailed. It is not restricted to
Win98 but also occures on a Win2k machine. I found out that
http request are sent to the LAN instead of the WLAN (don'n
know yet about ftp or similar protocols), while , for
instance, a SSH session or a ping to an external IP go to
the WLAN as intended. Seems as if the http requests are
directed to the first network connection the system can
find and this is obviously the LAN on the NIC. This view is
supported by the fact, that I can reach thi intrnet via
WLAN when first disablind the NIC in the device manager,
starting the browser an calling some pages and then
re-enable the NIC. If I do so, I have Internet connection
via the WLAN and connection to other computers on the LAN
at the same time until I restart my machine (without
disabling the NIC before). Could my problem have to do with
the fact, that the WLAN router (and hence the default
gateway) has an IP address that lies within the LAN subnet
(I did so to be able to connect to the WLAN router via the
NIC for configuration etc).

Regards,
Jens

The only other possibility I can think of is that the LAN uses a proxy
server for Internet access. To find out, go to Control Panel |
Internet Options | Connections | LAN Settings. If there are proxy
server settings, try disabling them by un-checking the box.
