WIN98SE networking with XP

I just replaced my old laptop (98SE), home PC (98) with
new XP units. The original network (all wireless) was
Home PC (primary) with 3 laptops (2 WIN98SE & 1 XP) all
connected to the network. The printer is hard wired to
the PC. Everything worked great (internet access, file
sharing & printer usage by all 4 computers).

With the new XP Home PC (primary), the one last laptop
(WIN98SE) can not see the printer on the network. The
other laptops (both XP) see & use the printer just find.
I've enabled file and printer sharing by the network on
the primary computer (otherwise the other 2 XP units
wouldn't work), but still no luck on WIN98SE. When I try
to install the printer and I "browse" for the network
printer, the primary computer shows up on the network,
but no printer is located under Mshome (the workgoup
name). I tried loading the software directly onto the
WIN98SE computer, but with out hard wiring the printer to
it, it won't recognize it.

I really think it is a WIN98SE going to XP interface
problem. When the reverse occured (XP using the printer
on the WIN98 computer) there was no problem at all.

What do I need to do in order to correct this problem?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Make sure that the XP printer's share name isn't longer than 12
characters. If it is, WIN98SE won't be able to see it.

Sorry to jump in here, but I had a similar issue just this
week. Not sure why 98 does this, but if you go
into "printers," and add the same printer again, and
change the default to the newly added printer, it will
recognize it. You will have the original printer as, say
HP950C, and the new second one as HP950C(2)(default). I
just did that to mine and it didnt affect the network
printer settings or the new printer settings.
Good Luck,
Max
