Win98SE can't connect to Win2K server using DHCP.

I am trying to connect a PC running Win98SE to a Win2K
server through a switch.

I can only connect to the server using a static IP. When I
try using DHCP, I cannot see the server. The server has
DHCP enabled.

I can connect to the server using WinXP and Win2K but why
can't I connect using Win98SE?

Can someone please help me resolve this problem? Thanx.

Can you ping the DHCP server by name? If not, then by IP address?

Hi,

Try running winipcfg when you have a DHCP address and when you have a
static address - what is different? Is the client getting an IP address on
the correct subnet? Is it getting the correct Wins server address? DNS
Server address? Default gateway?

Thanks,

The server has IP address 10.0.0.3. If I specify static IP
address 10.0.0.38 and Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 for the
client, then I can connect.

But if I choose "Obtain IP address automatically", I can't
get an IP address. Winipcfg will have zeroes for IP
address and Subnet Mask and DHCP Server 255.255.255.255.

Why is DNS, WINS needed? I know in Win2K and WinXP I can
leave everything as automatic. Is this possible under
Win98SE or do I have to specify all the addresses.

I appreciate all the help I can get.

Have you correctly set your scope, address pool and
authorized your DHCP Server? You can also include any DNS
or WINS Server Addresses needed in DHCP.

How did you get the '98 machine to log on to a 2003 domain
even in static IP mode? I've got an issue at my office,
we have like 50 XP machine and they're all fine to the new
2k3 domain, but the 4-5 old '98 boxes don't want to see it
at all. We have a static IP setup (only 50 workstations
so it's not so bad) but I can't get the '98 machines to
join a domain or log on to a domain.

Help!

I can use a Windows 2000 and Windows XP client machine to
access the Windows 2000 server using DHCP, so I don't want
to change any of its settings.

Any ideas on what further settings I need to look at on
the Windows 98SE machine.
