Customer has 8 win98 machines and 3 new xp machines,
networked tcp/ip and netbios. Server is win98 and (the
rest of the 98 machines do this too) will not consistently
read shares on XP machines. Sometimes it works, sometimes
it says "Device not present on network" even though the
machine shows up in net neighborhood. XP machines all
connect to each other and the 98s no problem. Tried all
the usual steps and settings incl. giving static IPs to
the XP boxes and installing netbeui off the XP cd, to no
avail. If you open a share on the 98 machine from the xp
and then open an XP share off the 98 machine, it works. I
suspect the problem is the XP machines but I've been thru
all the settings, and being an experienced tech this one
has me stumped... thanks in advance for any help.

Yes there's mapped drives... but I can't access them when
the 98 machine isn't connecting to the XP. Nor can I
create a mapped drive to a resource on the XP machine when
the 98 won't connect to it (obviously).
