I set up a Belkin Wireless G router hard-wired to an XP machine and w/ a
wireless adapter in an old 98SE machine upstairs. Internet browsing is fine
on both but I hit a snag while trying to set up the home network. Walked thru
the Network Setup Wizard fine on the XP machine but that machine does not
have a floppy so I couldn't create a setup disk. I read that you could use
the WinXP CD to do the setup on the 98 machine but when I tried it bombed
with an app error -
winxpchk - got the "Performed illegal operation and must shut down" message.
What steps can I take to set up w/o a setup disk?
TIA,
Steve

On 98SE, go to Control Panel | Network and:

1. Add these network components if they aren't already present:

TCP/IP protocol
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

2. Remove these network components if they're present:

IPX/SPX protocol
NetBEUI protocol
Client for NetWare networks

3. Configure the TCP/IP properties to obtain an IP address
automatically.

4. Set the workgroup name to the same name that the Windows XP
computer uses (default for XP is MSHOME).

5. Reboot.

6. Right-click and share desired disks, folders, and printers.

Thanks. That did it (mostly).

I set up a shared folder on the 98 machine and am able to put files there to
transfer back and forth.

I still need to get the 98 to see the network but based on other posts I've
seen I think I need to check the log in. I'll get back to that tomorrow. Ran
out of time tonight - trying to squeeze in yard work has been tough in the
Northeast this week ;-)

Thanks again
