Hi there, if someone can help me with this problem, note that I don't
know too much about networking.

I run a network with a DI-604 D-Link router on a alcatel speed touch
home DSL modem (Sympatico) One of the machine on the network is an
Inspiron 3500 laptop running windows-98 and a DE-660 D-Link PCMCIA
card. The other one is a desktop and has no problem to connect.

Getting to the problem... The router (that worked fine for several
years with the same setup) stopped suddenly the communication with the
WAN, so the network is working fine on LAN but can't get to the
internet anymore. The only thing that worked was to plug a NEtgear
router (RP614). But 99% of the time, the Inspiron can't connect with
this router (Just a few times it worked but I don't know why). There
was no problem at all with the desktop(running win 2000).

I tried with Fedora core 4 and UBUNTU on the laptop, both worked fine
with the netgear router but I found it too heavy for the celeron 400.

So I came back with Win-98, I bought a brand new DI-604 and I got the
same problem, The WAN won't connect.

If anybody knows about an issue that would explain at least one of
these misfunctions, that would be really appreciated.

Thanks for reading all of this )

Read comments below. Can't solve it immediately but there are some obvious
conclusions we can draw,

OK, so the Netgear/DSL modem combination is working (because the Desktop can
connect).

So the laptop works too (and I have to admire your persistence in installing
Linux to find this out ;-) ).

I presume this means the desktop can't reach the WAN either. Aha - so
there's nothing wrong with the DI-604s. This means that something has
changed somewhere to "break" the working configuration. Very carefully
compare the config. on the DI-604 and the Netgear router. Something is
different and this is what is hurting you.

When you've done this, see if the Win98 machine will connect again. If it
can't, are there any logs or error messages you can enabled on the Win98 or
router boxes? If there are, see what you can find out. Also, any apparent
PCMCIA errors?

Hi, thanks for the quick response.

I checked the settings of the Netgear router but I didn't find any
difference. But I don't know if there is others settings to look at
apart of the usual user-(E-Mail Removed) and the password.
