Win98: TCP/IP protocol won't link to network adapter

Any help would be appreciated!

I'm running Windows 98 on an old 450MHz machine.

I reinstalled a 3COM ethernet card after not having used it for a
while in order to hook up my computer to a DSL modem. The modem works.
The card works as well, and in principle, this should have been no
problem.

The card is recognized as installed correctly in the System>Device
Manager list. No conflicts, etc.

However, I'm having a hard time configuring it in the Control
Panel>Network window. The only adapter is the network card. I add
TCP/IP as a protocol for the network adapter, and I go through its
install from the CDROM. However, after restart, TCP/IP is not linked
to the adapter. TCP/IP is chosen in the Adapter>Properties>Bindings,
but in the window, there isn't the Protocol icon that says
"TCP/IP>3COM Ethernet...". It just says "TCP/IP".

So, the light doesn't go on when I plug the network card into the
modem.

Any suggestions? Why wouldn't the protocol bind with the adapter?

Since the only adaptor you use is the 3COM, there should only be one
TCP/IP entry...and when there is only one entry it won't be specific
to an adaptor(it will only say TCP/IP). For proof, add Microsoft
Dial-Up adaptor and you will then see two specific TCP/IP entries.
How is your DSL set up? Static IP or DHCP? If DHCP, what happens
when you run WINIPCFG?

As TheCrewser already pointed out, if there is only one item for TCP/IP to
bind to that's all that will be listed. There should be link lights on the
card even if TCP/IP is not installed, so look for faulty hardware (bad card,
bad cable, bad router/switch/etc).

Thanks for your replies. It's still giving me troubles, though!

I understand what you mean, and adding the dial-up adapter shows more
detailed TCP/IP links as you mentioned. So this isn't a source of my
problems.

I get a light at the back of the NIC, yet when I hook it up to the DSL
modem, the modem doesn't see it. I've run the 3COM diagnostics tests
and it appears fine. Windows recognizes the card as working properly.

Are there any settings in Win98 I should tweak? Changing the PCI slot
doesn't do anything. Does this sound like a faulty card? As I said,
the DSL modem works fine when connected to my laptop.

I'd bet it's a faulty card, or a faulty cable.

I changed the card to a 3COM 3C905B TX, and it worked right off the
bat. Thanks for the advice.
