Win98 system can't see NW

I have recently set up a small NW with all new WinXP Pro
systems plus one legacy Win98 system. It is a simple peer
to peer logging in through a common workgroup. For some
reason the Win98 system cannot see the network.
Furthermore, it cannot ping any of the other systems
including the common DSL router which supplies DHCP. But
the Win98 system CAN get on the Internet THROUGH the DSL
router that it cannot ping. I don't understand that.

Has anyone had this kind of problem? Is it possibly a
malufunctioning NIC. All my TCP/IP settings are set to
default (automatic IP/DNS addresses, etc), and as I said,
I can access the Internet via the DSL router just fine.

What other configuration problems could there be?

Thanks

See if the Win98 machine has NetBEUI bound to it's network adapter. The XP
machines to not come with NetBEUI installed. It is available on the XP CD.

NetBEUI is a non-routable protocol suitable for small networks. Support for
this protocol in Microsoft Windows has been discontinued. If you are
instructed by any product support personnel to install this protocol as a
temporary measure, follow the instructions below:

Open the following folder in the Windows XP CD: ValueAdd\Msft\Net\Netbeui.
Copy nbf.sys into the %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\directory.
Copy netnbf.inf into the %SYSTEMROOT%\INF\ directory.
Open network connection properties and click the "Install..." button to add
the NetBEUI protocol.

It doesn't come installed because it isn't needed.

"Cannot see the network" is hopelessly ambiguous. What
precisely have you tried, and what was the response?

Maybe they don't respond to pings for security reasons.

I had trouble "seeing" a share on a W2K box today from a
W98SE box. It turns out the permissions on the W2K box were
set to allow "Everybody" access (the default). Apparently
because I wasn't logged in as user "Everybody," accessing the
share failed. Adding my W98SE user name to the permission
list solved the difficulty. Your XP problem might be similar.
