if I try and browse my network from the Win98SE machine I get the message

unable to browse network check network trouble-shooter..

however I do have an internet connection via my LAN....

I have

TCP/IP loaded
Netbeui
File and Printer sharing enabled
Microsoft Family Logon
Client for Microsoft Networks

I can ping between machines
and from my WinXP machine which is part of a separate domain I can see the
MSHOME workgroup when the Win98 machine starts but when I try and browse the
workgroup it is inaccessible

there is no firewall in place
and win98 is up to date with all critical patches and service packs.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Rick

Ok it gets even stranger...

If I do a find computer on the network...I can see the workgroup, the
computer and a share that I have set up...

However I still cannot browse the network and see the workgroup etc

Nor can I connect to the share that I have established because the computer
is unavailable....

Ok Fixed It

The fix which worked was...

1) remove Netbeui on the Ethernet adaptor and modem
2) Disble the modem
3) Disable the 2 unidentified hardware devices sitting in the device list
4) Reboot
5) Get bored with Win98 and lack of progress and install Win98 games from
Win98SE CD
6) Browse network and fall over in suprise when it all started working
7) Reboot and just check again

Then just to check it:

Ok once I had done this I can see the computer sitting in its workgroup and
I can share its directories with other computers

Ok I admit the installation of solitaire was an inspired guess ) and
probably had damn all to do with it working...

The question is will it remain working when returned to the client?? As you
may guess I am not taking bets

Thank God Win98 is generally headed for the skip!!

The reason I dumped all my Win98 machines and moved over to XP was problems
with networking reliability. So for serious useage dont waste time and
effort on this, just go out and buy a new tower unit with WinXP on it...it
makes more sense.

Rick

your problem was NetBeui ...XP does not natively support NetBeui

1) remove Netbeui on the Ethernet adaptor and modem ....would be the one
that did it for ya

if you are using file and print sharing over TCP/IP , you better have a
firewall ...or use IPX for file sharing

Strangely it sounds like a problem I read about which was occuring in W95 I
think. Someone goofed and a file wasn't getting installed untill certain
games were which could be played over the net. From that one can assume
that the MS networking group all had the game installed and never realized
without the game their project was broken. Sort of shows the priority of
that group, heh?
