I have used the home networking setup disk on my XP
computer and I have run it on a win98 SE computer and
shared out folders and printers on both machenes.

When I am on the XP machene I see the folders in my
network places and can access the win98 machene. But when
I am on the WIN98 Machene and look in network neighborhood
I do not see the XP machene and folders?

What do I do?

Try turning off the XP's built-in firewall.

I have the same problem. I have turned off the firewall
to no avail. Also, when I try to access Network
Neighborhood on the 98 machine, the search 'flashlight'
appears and it basically hangs (task master shows not
responding). I am never able to see the XP computer, or
any shared folders. This has happened to me on two
different networks, both of which have W98 2nd edition and
XP PRO.

Pinging doesn't work either, yet the XP can 'see' the 98
machine.

In one case I had the 98 machine doing ICS thru the XP box
and it worked (98 could access the Internet), yet there
was no direct connectivity between the machines. I now
have the two on a router, connected to a DSL modem, and
both can access the Internet but not each other.

On one of the networks, I have a W98 laptop, and I have
bidirectional connectivity to the XP, so it's just the 98
desktop that seems isolated.

I've reinstalled 98 to no avail.

Someone said that the logon's have to be identical on the
98 machine and the XP machine, but my laptop experience
(above) seems to say that's not true.

Any other ideas?

thanks....

You can enable or disable XP's firewall independently on each network
connection. Make sure that it's disabled on the LAN connection.

While troubleshooting, un-install all other firewall programs
(ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, etc) on both computers. If
you've previously un-installed a firewall, re-install it, un-install
it, and go to Start | Run | Msconfig | Startup to disable any
remnants.

Make sure that NetBIOS Over TCP/IP is enabled, as shown here:

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...hoot/netbt.htm

Run an antivirus scan and a spyware scan.

Some recent antivirus programs can interfere with network access.
Temporarily disable Norton, McAfee, etc, and see if that makes any
difference.

I had the same problem. For some silly reason, when I
open network neighborhood, it shows XP via 98se, but I
couldn't get into it. "Network not accessable." I
discovered that by clicking on the entire network icon,
it showed my workgroup, and by clicking on that showed
all of my computers and I had access. I don't know why it
is that way, but it is.
