Two machines, WinXP and Win98, working happily together for years, lose
network functionality overnight, and cannot even ping each other.

Wiring seems OK. Static IP addresses 198.168.0.1 and 10 on subnet mask
255.255.255.0 seem OK.

However when I run IPConfig on the Win98 machine it is showing TWO network
adapters, one with the correct IP address and one on 0.0.0.0. Is this
relevant?

In Device Manager, there is of course only one network adapter.

What should I do?

Is the second network adapter's name or description "PPP Adapter"? If
so, it's used for dial-up networking, and it's OK.

Check the network hardware. Try different cables, hub or switch
ports, etc.

Yes the second network adapter was the PPP Adapter.

The problem turned out to be a faulty cable.

Thanks for your reply.

You're welcome. I'm glad that my suggestion helped you solve the
