I have a home network between a win xp home edition
machine, and win 98 se machine, running through a linksys
etherfast cable/dsl router. If I leave the win 98
machine running overnight, the following morning I can't
get it to "wake-up". I never had this problem prior to
installing the network 2 weeks ago. What am I missing?

Thanks,
Rob

I have a similar problem on XP Pro/Win98 network. At first I thought it had
to do with power saving settings, so I disabled these - but the problem
still remains.

I was told be someone else that it had to do with my ISP changing their
static IP addresses a couple of times a day, where win xp will handle it
without a problem, win 98 doesn't. I don't understand why that would cause
my system to lock up. I did however change my power saving settings and I no
longer have the lock-up problem, just loosing the home network connection.
Now I will try the "ipconfig" program and see if I can reasstablish the
connections.

I don't know if this helps or not, since you said that changing the power
saving settings didn't help you.

I can't see how changing IP address would cause this and in my case I don't
think my ISP changes the public IP address whilst I'm logged on and secondly
the IP address only goes to the DSL modem not the individual PC's.

In my case I'm sure it has something to do with the XP/98 network, as it
doesn't only happen overnight but after any period where the 98 machine is
inactive for more than a few hours. If I leave it on overnight but not
logged in to the network it doesn't lock up.

It's not a major issue, but it would be nice to be able to solve it.

does your MB BIOS have "wake on lan" feature? try turning it on to see if
it will keep your win98 box "alive"

Thanks for the tip - unfortunately, this isn't a feature of this box.

my linksys router has a "keep alive" option to keep the connection from
going inactive ...
I wonder if that would help...

I'm going to test to see if it is network related by disconnecting the
network and seeing if that makes any difference.
