Win98 laptop can't connect to the internet - Help!!

My old laptop was connecting fine to the internet, and a couple of weeks
ago, stopped connecting to the internet. I then tried to connect with a usb
network adaptor after removing the pcmcia network adaptor, and it still
won't connect. I've also tried reformatting and reloading the system with
Win98SE from scratch. Still without success. It doesn't seem to be able to
find a gateway, although I give it one through the properties for the tcp/ip
for the network adaptors. I can see the other desktops on the network from
the laptop, but it just won't connect to the internet. The other desktops,
also Win98SE, don't have a problem connecting to the internet. I've tried
everything that I could think of to connect to the internet. Any ideas on
this would be appreciated.
