WIN98 connection

I have 5 XP & 2Win98 workstations on a SBS 5.5. All
workstation can connect and access the Internet. I have
removed the 4.5 server and replaced it with SBS 2000. 4
out of the 5 XP workstations work fine and can surf. But 1
XP and both WIN98 workstation cannot access the web and
sometimes the 98 workstations will indicate no domain
server available to validate your password. From these 3
workstations I can ping the gateway and DNS, but cannot
ping any address outside. I have verified all settings and
even replaced NIC's

The strange thing is I can remove the SBS 2000 and put the
SBS 5.5 back on the network and everything works.

I know it's something simple. Please advise.

Thanks

When running Win9x on your network you should install NetBuie on ALL
machines. By default the Win2K and XP do not load NetBuie. Also on the Win9x
machines remove SPX (it was installed by default).
Also Win2k uses DNS for everything. You may want to consider a Win2k Dynamic
DNS for YOUR network. It will make life easier, at least once you set it up.
Although I think the SBS would have done that unless you said No.
Once you have YOUR DNS zone setup point all WSs to it. Also check your
gateway settings.
Oh, (I just re-read this all) you say you can ping the DNS but not external
addresses? So is the DNS server Yours (inside the firewall)? Then you must
set it to forward request to an Internet DNS server (i.e. your ISPs). Also
be sure it is NOT set as a root authority.
Also can you ping by IP and not by Name? Or you can not ping by either? Did
you try TRACERT to see where the packets fail?
Well that should keep you busy for a while. Good Luck.

I disagree strongly. Never install it unless you absolutely need it.
Even Microsoft is moving away from it (as you suggest in your next
sentence).

By default the Win2K and XP do not load NetBuie. Also on the Win9x

After being targeted with gigabytes of trash by the "SWEN" worm, I have
concluded we must conceal our e-mail address. Our true address is the
mirror image of what you see before the "@" symbol. It's a shame such
steps are necessary. ...Charlie

Yes it is "old". But, if you want Win9x machines to see stuff on the network
NetBUIE is want those machines want to use as they too are "old".

It's not necessary (for certain) and not advisable (IMHO).
