WIN98 BASIC NETWORKING SETUP HELP!

Hi,

I have a WIN98 (Gold?) PIII 233Mhz. DELL Inspiron 3500 laptop I'm trying to
resurrect. The network setup area (Control Panel) must have a zillion
entries in it -- well, OK, about 20 -- from TWAIN to AOL adapter to D-LINK
wired Network Card PCMCIA (DFE-690TXD) to you-name-it.

Because I ultimately will clean install my system after saving my important
data, I would like to have the **b-a-r-e m-i-n-i-m-u-m** network setup to
start all over again, i. e., Client For Microsoft Networks, TCP-IP, etc.

Will someone please guide me through how to arrange that setup after I
delete all the many entries in the current setup? I'd like to do this before
clean installing to link to some valuable Net sites -- but I can't get online
with anything at the moment! )

THANK YOU!

Goob

AFAIK, 233MHz machines are either Pentium Pro, or early Pentium II - not
PIII (but that's probably irrelevant, anyhow)...

Best thing is to NOT use the Network Properties yet - but to make sure that
only the programs you currently use for networking are installed....
If you don't use AOL, uninstall it
I have no idea why TWAIN would be in networking - unless you've been
accessing scanners or cameras over the network??

Boot to Safe Mode and make sure that all hardware that has been removed from
the system no longer exists in Device Manager - remove it if it does!

Then go back into Network Properties, and remove any entries that remain
that you don't need - in the following order
Protocols
Adapters
Clients

You probably need no more than
Clients: - Client for MS Networks
Adapters:- Ethernet Controller
MS Virtual Private Networking Adapter (and maybe not
even this!)
your modem(if you use dialup networking at all)
Protocols:- NDISWAN (if you have the VPN adapter installed, only)
TCP/IP - one entry for each adapter

...and that's it - if you have AOL installed, then it'll automatically
install required adapters, etc. when you install AOL after the reformat.

Thank you Noel for the help. My processor is indeed a PII -- Belarc
advisor): my bad. I uninstalled AOL 100% and now can connect to the net
through the D-Link PCMCIA card, but the connection, especially for IE6, is
hideously slow...I realize this is an old OS with a puny chip, but some
programs will zoom along, so I'm into the IE performance issues. I've pretty
much assured myself that the sys is now pest-free at all levels if I can
trust Kaspersky and CA anti-virus/malware scanners, although I cannot
download/install Trend-Micro or Panda Software free online scanners, usually
because I get an engine install error before the process completes.. The
prob is still the performance...

My question: are there any extremely reliable registry repairers that might
give the sys a boost before I clean install? Maybe I won't have to?

Thank you so much for the help : )

OUCH!
Trying to run KAV or Panda on a 233MHz machine is going to be like watching
treacle running of a cold spoon..
What's your normal background AV?...on a system like that, I'd go for a
stripped-down AVG (don't install either the email, or Office support - the
normal background scanner should be sufficient). How much RAM is installed??
(and how much has been stolen by the graphics?)

Check that you're not still using some form of proxy settings that aren't
required by your ISP (and most that are 'required' aren't actually
'necessary')

The DFE-690TXD is only a network card, not a modem, so there ain't nothin'
there that's going to limit your speed, believe me!
where the problem may be is at the other end of the wire to the card...
(what else is on the network?? - is it just that everything else seems so
much faster, because of the AV bottleneck??)

Thank you again!

Normal bkgrnd scanner is eTrust v6.0 and latest definitions (from CA).
Because I am on a biz trip until I can again see the Belarc Summary late
tonight, I'll guess at the RAM: 64-128Mb. I use a cable modem conx which is
blazing with my other, desktop sys (granted about 500x more powerful : ) I
have nothing else on the network. As you suggest, it is probably the AV
bottleneck. I have no experience with AVG, and will take your suggestions to
heart. Still puzzled why I can't get the Trend and Panda free online
scanners to load -- they have proven very reliable, granted with other sys,
in the past. I suspect that I have Registry corruption, so I should probably
be investigating any super-reliable registry repairers before I take the
plunge with the clean install.

I apologize for not being better prepared with more specific info while away
from home...I do not wish to violate any of the goodpost rules : (

The best registry repair I know is "SCANREG /FIX" from a DOS boot -
registry 'fixing' utilities are worth the weight of the gold they're boxed
in
Seriously - run scanreg, and see what it does - I suspect not a lot.
If you *have* to run some kind of registry repair tool, then DO NOT let it
autofix anything! - there are too many ways for them to screw up, and all
need to be check with the MkI Eyeball.
If you had serious registry corruption, you'd have a lot more serious
problems than just slow browsing.

Most likely causes of problems with online scanners is ActiveX - it's a bit
of a bugger sometimes! - but we'd need to see exact error messages for that
(and it may give pointers to other things).
One thing that comes to mind is the HOSTS file - in WIn9x, once this gets
above a certain size, it can cause slowdowns similar to what you're seeing -
do you have a HOSTS file here (it MAY be hidden, and marked as a System
file, so make sure that Folder properties are set appropriately).??

Noel

THANK YOU!!!!

Even in the absence of more specific info with me while I'm on the road, I
*can* say that ActiveX has been a prob since I took on the responsibility of
trying to revive my laptop. I have indeed gotten error messages such as
"ActiveX must be installed prior to using this program. Please install
ActiveX and try the program again." -- such had been the case with both Trend
and Panda, but no longer. I figure that reason is because of the efforts
I've put in to repair the sys thus far; but there is obviously more work to
be done (fingers crossed). In any case, I still do not get the typical
yellowish pop-up bar under the IE address area.

I had tinkered with my security settings for *hours* trying to tweak them so
I could get back to the yellowish pop-up asking me to make a decision with
regard to ActiveX installation, but I've achieved nil so far.

I will check on the HOSTS first-thing when I return home this evening.

Any ideas about the glitch with ActiveX? One "expert" has assured me that I
do indeed have ActiveX running because I'm able to get to Microsoft Update
fairly easily. That's where it starts to get out of my league. Maybe a
hijack file is called for at this point?

THANK YOU so much for all your time : )

Noel,

THANKS again!

I honestly forget how to change folder options in 98 so that all hidden
files are accessible -- don't currently see a HOSTS file...but maybe it's
hidden?!

I ran scanreg -- maybe helped a tad.

Someone opined that I might be able to run Trend-Micro and Panda in safe
mode, but how do I keep the networking working so I can connect?

THANKS FOR ALL!!

You can't run the online versions of AV's in Win9x Safe Mode - as you've
noticed, there's not networking while in Safe Mode (there is, in XP though)
Most installed AV's will run in Safe Mode, though - and so long as your own
AV is up to date, it should be good enough for most things.

Either Control Panel - Folder Options
or
Windows Explorer - View- Folder Options

Click on the View tab, and set the options appropriately

ActiveX has been a problem for some users recently, since the installation
of the 'EOLAS patch' which was forced upon MS by a lawsuit. You could try
checking other posts in .gen_discussion or in public.windowsupdate for
details.

THANK YOU so much, Noel...I'm going to take your suggestions and go with a
scaled-down AVG -- do you know of any recommended link(s)?

BTW, and this might not be the forum for it so apologies in advance, do you
know the command in Run for finding the sys CD product key number in the
Registry?

THANKS FOR ALL!!

Goob
