All versions of Windows can network with each other. I've written a
web page that should help you get the new XP machines to network
smoothly with the old 98SE machines:

If you expect to have an XP machine share its disks, folders, and
printers with more than 5 other computers at the same time, get XP
Professional. It allows 10 simultaneous connections, while XP Home
Edition only allows 5 simultaneous connections. Details here:
