I just purchased a Linksys router for my desktop along
with the Linksys notebook adapter for my laptop. The
laptop has win98 and the desktop has winXP. The router
installation worked fine and the desktop receives the ISP
signal just fine, but the laptop software and driver
installation did not work.........after reading the fine
print I realized that the min sys requirements were
win98SE......mine is win98v4.1. Can I get around this
problem without an upgrade to my OS?? Also, apparently
the free support from MS for win98 expired earlier this
year. Any ideas would be appreciated!!

What tells you that you have win98v4.1, and how do you know that's the
original, not Second Edition?

Right click My Computer and click Properties. Original Win98 says
"Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.1998", and Second Edition says "Microsoft
Windows 98 Second Edition 4.10.2222".

If you have original Win98, go to the Linksys web site and see if you
can find a driver for your network card to download.

In my experience, it sometimes takes several attempts to get a Linksys
network card driver to install correctly. I've had so many problems
installing Linksys network cards and drivers, on multiple versions of
Windows, that I won't buy Linksys any more.

I am running "first edition" and ran into the same scenario. Many card
vendors list a vague "Windows 98" in the system requirements. Often, the
"SE" is implicit, making it difficult to get a straight answer on whether
"First Edition" is supported.

I shopped Best-Buy online, looking for the right D-Link model/rev. The
picture and specs on the web were right, but the store did not have the
right revision of the card.

Since I was there, I browsed other cards/specs. I saw that the Microsoft
MN-520 covered First Edition. I took it home and it saw the rest of my
Netgear/D-Link network just fine.

Good Luck,

rsquared
