OK I have two dual boot computers networked
to each other. If they both are running either MS
or linux, I have a good connection.

The most important matter at hand for me now is to
be able to telnet from the Win98 machine into the
linux machine.

But the Win98 machine cannot see the linux
machine. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

OK. What do you mean by "cannot see"?

Can you ping the Linux machine by it's IP address from the Win98 machine?
Can you ping by hostname?
Can you traceroute the Linux machine by it's IP address from the Win98 machine?
Can you traceroute by hostname?
What error do you get when you use TELNET.EXE to connect to the Linux machine?

Use ssh not telnet.
On Windows I like "putty" for ssh, google for it.
Make sure Linux firewall has opening for ssh.

Does telnet give you any messages before it hangs?

Also,

What firewall are you using and why/where? I have a gateway box that I
run Smoothwall on. I have my W2k/SuSE box tied into it and the system
works like a charm!

If you can't ping the other box by IP go back to layer 1 and start again.
Check ALL physical connections and cables. Use a cable tester....do it.

Then when you have layer 1 ok move up to your IP addresses.

How is you LAN setup????
