Win2k3 Server can't ping gateway

I just moved a Windows 2003 domain controller running exchange server to a
new location/IP range. Now I can't get the machine to ping the gateway.
Here's a little background just to make sure you know what I've done.

I'm using bogus names but you'll get the point.

1. The server names is xmsp.ixmn.mydomain.com
2. The server used to run the NS for mydomain.com but now the DNS is ran
off another machine.
3. I don't know how to make the "xmsp" machine authoritive for just the
ixmn.mydomain.com domain but I did get it so it's running DNS locally and AD
(or something else) is updating the DNS correctly when I make IP changes to
the box.
4. Before I got #3 working, I could not get the machine to successfully
repair the network connection as it failed on the registering dns. That's
all good now.
5. When I try to ping 127.0.0.1, it works
6. When I try to ping the public IP of the machine, it works
7. When I try to ping the gateway, it fails
8. I've deleted the arp cache and that did nothing
9. I've tried running netdiag /fix and that did nothing
10. When I run netdiag, everything passes except for the gateway check
(yes, the IP for the gateway is good)
11. I've made sure the network cable is good and even used a workstation
with the same IP this machine is supposed to be just to make sure there were
no firewall issues.

So, I'm left with a machine that runs great except that it can't get out to
the internet, or even the gateway. PLEASE HELP! I'm a programmer that
knows a thing or two about servers and am usually able to get things done
but this one has stumped me.

Thanks in advance,
Jason

Hi,

Can you tell us what are IP settings used on this computer (IP address,
subnet, ...) and what is your default gateway IP address. Can you ping and
other address on the same subnet? Can you see the gateway MAC address on
this server? Can you try and ping the server from the gateway. What happens?

Thanks for the quick reply. The IP is is 10.0.1.80 and the gateway is
10.0.1.81. The subnet is 255.255.255.0. I'm not sure how I can look to see
the MAC of the gateway on the server but I do know I can't ping it or ping
the server from any other machine. For now, the gateway is a DSL router
that doesn't give me the ability to test pings. Let me know if I can give
anymore information to get this nailed down as I am a little stressed about
this issue.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

You can see MAC address by running this command from command ling

arp -a

Try to ping the gateway and any other computer on same subnet then run the
above command. Do you get any entries?

If you can't ping anything on this subnet, check cables, network card,
network card drivers, switch, switch ports, etc...

Now I'm really confused. Here's more info:

The line goes into the DSL router, which has an integrated hub. Off one
port, I have a wireless gateway/switch that all my machines are plugged
into. The machines all use non-routable IPs. For testing, I took one
machine plugged in to the wireless gateway/switch and get it a routable IP
within my block of IPs. That worked fine (I don't understand how but I'll
except it). I then took the same cable used on that machine and plugged it
into the server. On the server, I gave it the same routable IP as the test
machine and nothing works. The test machine isn't on the net anymore so
there isn't an IP conflict.

Now, when I change the IP of the server to one of the non-routable IPs, it
works...to a certain degree. With the non-routable IP, I can ping any IP
but not a domain name. That tells me I need to change something in the DNS
on the server, I just don't know what. If you can tell me that, I'd
appreciate it.

My biggest issue is that IP. I need the server to have a public IP. I
can't enable NAT at the moment and don't see the need since I was able to
get the desktop machine to work on the public IP connected to the same port
using the same wire. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

What did you set as DNS server under TCP/IP properties?

You wrote in previous post that you server has IP address 10.0.1.80 and
gateway 10.0.1.81. Did this change now? You mention in your last post that
your server needs to have public IP address?
