Hi,

First the background info. I'm trying to set up a VPN connection between two
offices whith the RRAS service in Windows 2003 Standard.
I've already set it up as an internet gateway - ie Internet Connection
Sharing using RRAS.
I have a DNS server and a DHCP server on there as well. As far as I can tell
they work as they should. At one end there is a domain running - but not in
the other, so that should cause no problems.

My problem is that the two offices won't connect to eachother every time I
try to connect. Once in a while when I'm not looking it connects by itself.
I'd really like to get rid of this annoying little problem.. any ideas? I've
tried disabling the firewalls => no effect.

// Fredrik

You should not use ICS with a domain setup. There are too many
incompatibilities, particularly with DNS. You can use RRAS/NAT.

If you want to make the offices work as a single network, you will need
to use a router-to-router VPN connection.A normal client-server style VPN
connection does not allow you to route between the two sites. Only the
actual "dialup" machine can see the other LAN. You can use a third party
solution, or use Windows RRAS routers. Read the info in W2k3 help on router
to router links as a first step.

I am usingg RRAS/NAT - I meant that it gives the appearance of usingg ICS
(for the end users anyway).

I've been trying to get router-to-router VPN to work - but that is what
doesn't work all the time... already tried the helpfiles - as I said, it
works sometimes and sometimes not (without changing any settings).

Hello,

Do you have any problems with regular VPN client connections?
Are there any events from RemoteAccess being logged in event viewer?

Have you tried to recreate the Demand Dial interfaces on both servers?
One thing to remember is that when adding a demand-dial interfac, the username, configured from the credentials screen during the Demand-Dial Wizard,
must match the name of the interface that you will be dialing into and be a valid RAS user account on that system or domain.

Please take a look at the following URL for more information about virtual Private networks in Windows 2003.
