Win2k3 DNS Problem

Hi all,
This is a newbie!

I have a Win 2003 enterprise server, which is the primary domain
controller, with active directory installed. There are some Win XP
clients in the network, they all are joined to domain, and working
properly. I want to add a new XP client to the network, but:

When I use System Properties > Computer Name > Network ID to join the
station to the domain, first it needs a user account in the domain,
which is defined in AD and I provide it with password. The wizard says:

The account exists, do you want to use that, (or something like that),

I say Yes.
I also provide the domain name, e.g. ABCD.COM

Clicking Next in the wizard, gives the error message, and says:

"A domain controller for the domain ABCD could not be contacted.
Ensure that the domain
name is typed correctly."

Clicking "Help" brings up the article, suggesting that I should do:

nslookup
set q=srv
_ldap.tcp.dc._msdcs.DNSDomainName

to add a SRV resource record (which I don't know what it is) to let the

station locate the
AD domain controller.

But when I use nslookup, the first thing I get is:

*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.1: Non-existent domain

Default Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.0.1

Is this the problem?
But I get this message from all the clients in the domain, and also the

domain controller itself!

What should I do?
Please help me if someone knows the solution.

TIA.

Hi Tyler,

What is IP address of your Active Directory DNS server? Is DNS service
running?

What IP address is used on your Active Directory server under Preferred and
Alternative DNS (under TCP/IP properties).

Are there any errors in event logs on the clients (specially Application and
System logs). Are there any errors in these logs on domain controllers?

To add computer to domain right click on My Computer and click on
Properties. Now click on Computer Name tab. Here click on Change... button.
In the window that opens ("Computer Name Changes") enter name of your domain
(e.g. abcd.com).

Hi Miha,

I found a clue to join the client to the domain,
The wrong issue was that the "TCP/IP Netbios Helper" service was not
started, I started it and set it to automatic.
Then I used:

---------------------------
To add computer to domain right click on My Computer and click on
Properties. Now click on Computer Name tab. Here click on Change...
button.
In the window that opens ("Computer Name Changes") enter name of your
domain
(e.g. abcd.com).
----------------------------

and finally I got a "welcome to domain ABCD.com" message.

But,
When I restated the system, and set the domain combo box of the logon
prompt to ABCD, a small modal comes up saying:
"Please wait while the domain list is created..."
I guessed that it might be "TCP/IP Netbios Helper" service issue again,
so I restarted and logged on locally, and yes, the service was not
running!

So I started it, logged off, and again tried to logon to domain, but
still got that modal message!!!

BTW, about the preffered DNS Server, yes, I have set it to my AD DNS
Server IP: 192.168.0.1, and the service is running. But I'm wondering
the problem comes from somewhere else...

TIA
