Win2008 File sharing malfunctions occasionally

Hello,

We have one windows 2008 SP1 server which acts as a file and print server
for our domain. For some reason it has had difficulties with shared folders
lately.

Problem is that users cannot access ALL their files on a share located on
this server. There are 3 shares and when this problem occurs some shares
might work ok some not. We redirected users home folders to this server and
especially home folders seems to have problems. Some files and folders are
accessible during these "error" periods some not. When client tries to open
a problem share the clients (WinXP) explorer.exe stops responding. There's
no error messages like "server not avaliable" etc.

At the same time I can ping the problem server and our DC's ok and I can
access these servers remote desktop so they are online. Problem seems to be
on file shares. (SMB level?) I cannot see any relevant errors in the problem
servers event logs. Booting XP desktop does not solve the issue. Only
booting the file server does.

Any ideas how to troubleshoot??

I have already changed servers network adapter, updated drivers, changed
network cables, changed the switch its connected to and installed all 2008
Server MS patches.

I don't think that this is a hardware issue.

Thanks
Will

Hello William,

Are the machines all on the same subnet?

Do you use only domain internal DNS servers?

Are you using IPv6 or only IPv4 on the NIC?

Best regards
