Win2003 server with multiple op sys inc win98

I've just installed win2003 server on a dual bios RAID system for a real
estate office of approx 30 computers. I do not have a domain set up yet but
plan to. So far none of the windows 98 computers can connect to the server.
A password dialog comes up but won't accept the admin password. In the
dialog there is no place to enter the user, only password. When winxp users
connected for the first time I had to enter administrator and the password
for them to connect even though I set the folders they need to access to
full authorization. I've had to switch back to winxp on the server
temporarily now until I resolve the win98 problem however.

1. Why do I need to enter the administrator name and password from the
client xp pcs in order to access full shared folders on the server? I really
don't like having to supply a password at all because realtors come in with
their wireless laptops and will need access to certail folders on the
server. I do not want to have to supply a password to allow access to these
folders - it will tick the realtors off.

2. What do I need to do to enable win98 pcs to be able to access shared
folders on the server? I read in this forum something about disabling SMB. I
can't find any help on this, where to go or how to do it. Also there was a
suggestion that Netbios be enabled over TCP/IP on the server - is this true
and will it cause problems elsewhere if I do it?

3. When I do set up the server domain controller what issues am I looking at
with regards to the multiple operating system pc's? Will win98 pc's be able
to join the domain? If not, can they at least share folders? Will I not be
able to use printer monitoring if they can not join the domain?

BTW - the main reason we went to 2003 server is to be able to take advantage
of using a domain controller with full printer monitoring using an
application on the server to keep track of who prints what from which
printer - for billing purposes. I hope we can do this for win98 laptops too.

thanks,
DJ

To disable forced signing of SMB, open Local Security Policy [secpol.msc]
and go to security settings/local policies/security options and the option
for Microsoft network server: digitally sign communications(always), set to
DISABLED [not undefined]. Netbios over tcp/ip should be enabled by default
and left that way in the network. It can be checked in network adapter
tcp/ip properties/advanced/wins. You should also have a wins server on the
network and the W2003 server and tithe wins server need to also be wins
client as configured in tcp/ip properties or via DHCP scope. I think your
password problem is because you need to create local user accounts on the
W2003 Server for all users that need to access it with logon/password
matching what they are logging onto their computers [Microsoft networking
credentials for W98 computers]. When you create your domain controller make
sure you refer to the last link below to make sure that your dns is
configured correctly for the domain. --- Steve
