Win2000Pro and WPA

Hi

I spent a bit of a frustrating few hours getting my Linksys WRT54G router
and Linksys WPC54G laptop cards to work together. The source (apparently) of
my frustration was trying to use WPA encryption with my 2 computers that
are Windows 2000 Pro machines. When I switched to WEP everything worked
fine.

Question: Can someone give the rundown on how to incorporate WPA while using
Win2K, if possible?

Will a more current firmware upgrade to either my router and/or PC card be
sufficient or do I need some sort of 3rd party software to make it happen?
Thanks for any advice.

Oh, once I got past all of the little hassles and learning curves of the
setup, I'm initially pretty impressed with the speed and range of the LAN
and internet connections.

J

Hi,
W2K doesn't support WPA without additional software.
Please have a look at the site below:
http://www.wirelesssecuritycorp.com/...PAAssistant.do

I haven't tested the sw on my very sloooow W2K machine yet. I decided to
stick with WEP and MAC filtering.

Did you get WPA drivers from Linksys?
CWPC54G version 2 Last Driver Version: 6.0.0.18
"Check the Drivers tab under the device information and verify that the
driver version has now changed to 3.20.21.0"
That doesn't make sense to me... but you might try it.

CNet doesn't think it will work:

"If you're using the WPC54G with Windows 98, Me, or 2000, you'll have to
settle for WEP, though, since the Linksys WPC54G Wireless-G notebook
adapter needs XP's Zero Config tool for WPA support. "

That's wierd, I had WPA running on my Win2K laptop using the WPC54G
(though I coudn't use it, as my wife's identical laptop wouldn't load
the latest WPA drivers, so we compromised on WEP).

I guess the answer is "If you can make it work, it'll work for you."

Who knows what version they were using.
Is your wife's computer at the same Windows patch level as yours?
Are you using the latest drivers from Linksys?

Thanks for all the comments.

Question: I can see that there is a driver update for a WPC54G v.2
(6.0.0.18). I just wanted to make sure that that driver was indeed the
updated driver for this PC card (currently using the 3.30.15.0 version that
came on the install CD that I notice is the same driver as the current
driver on the "Support Page"). I'm a little hesitant as the driver listed on
the "Drivers and Downloads" (6.0.0.18) page says it is for WPC54G v2 (would
this apply to my WPC54G?--I can't tell what version my card is; for all I
know the v2 maybe means you'll have a v2 when the driver is installed or the
driver is simply v2). I'm probably being paranoid--it's gotta be the
updated driver, what else would it be for?...there's only 1 WPC54G right? (I
know there's a GS...)

http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=36&prid=642

One other thing: I installed the PC card using the install CD and now I
notice that there is something called Odyssey Network Services Miniport in
device manager and it has attached itself to my wireless PC card and the
original PPPOE adaptor that I used to connect to DSL over wired connection.

Can anyone shed some light on what THAT is?

Thanks again.
