I am new to Windows server so my questions may sound noobish. Anyway
I have Windows Server 2003 setup and a mix of XP and Win2000 machines. I
read where there was some limited conectivity with Win2000 but I had no
idea. I can access all the shares on the server from XP but I can't even
see them from 2000. I can see the shares on the 2000 box from the server
but can't access any of them.

Any way around this?

Danny

Can you ping the server by IP? If yes, can you ping it by name?

I can see the server from the 2000 box from Windows Explorer as well as
the XP machine. I can not see the shares or access anything on the server.
From the server, using Windows Explorer, I can see the 2000 box and the
shares but I can't access them.

Yes I can ping by IP and Name both ways.

Here's something else: If I'm not logged into the domain from the XP
laptop I have full access to the Win2000 box but once I login to the domain
it asks for a user name and password.. Even though I'm logged in with the
same user name and password that has full admin access on the 2000 box it
wont work. I have to login with "computer name/user name" and then the
password for that user on that box. I then have full access. So it must
be a security policy or something to do with domain policy.

Hello Danny C.,

Are the 2000 and 2003 server in the same domain?

Can you ping them by ip address, computername and FQDN?

Have you enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP on the machines to use network browsing
which i assume when you are talking about "seeing" shares?

Best regards

Yes they are both in the same domain. It just a test setup with 1 Windows
Server 2003 Enterprise set as a DC, 1 Win2000 box and 1 XP Pro Laptop. The
laptop is 100% compatible but the 2000 box seems to be restricted.

Yes I can ping with IP and Name but not sure what FQDN is. By seeing I
mean if you open Window Explorer and work down the tree in My Netork Places,
when I get to the name of the Domain Name under MS Windows Networks and
click on the domain it shows all the computers but you can't access any of
them. If I'm not logged on to the domain I have access to the XP machine
and the XP machine has access to the shares on the 2000 box.
I have used the 2000 box as a file server for years but since joing it
to a domain it is restricted.

I did gpresult /v and under Server Type it says WindowsNT 4. Is that
right? Doesn't look right to me I have increased the server level to
Windows Server 2003 from Windows 2000 Native but it didn't make any
difference.

Hello Danny C.,

FQDN=Full qualified domain name, "server1.mydomain.com" for example. Please
post an unedited ipconfig /all from the 2003/2000 and the problem client
machines.

Best regards
