Win XP firewall

I know that the WinXP firewall is pretty basic and does not check
out-going traffic. If I got a full-service firewall like Kerio, say,
or any other, would it be acceptable just to turn off the XP firewall?
If it were left running, would the 2 firewalls interefere with one
another?
John.

I run Sygate firewall and have turned off the XP firewall. Everything
runs exactly as I would expect it to. I can't see any point in trying
to run them in parallel especially when the XP firewall wants to open
some ports I would prefer to be closed.

Thanks. Do you know which ports it tries to open?

The one I remember is 5000 but there were others.

Try the ShieldsUp scan with only the XP firewall running and you'll soon
see what's open, other ports may be blocked but not stealthed. I'd far
sooner *nothing* was visible to the outside world, if you can't be seen
to exist you're not much of a target for those with evil intent!

Apart from anything else it would use up System resources.
Norton IS has a marked effect on my wife's Duron 600 laptop.

On the occasions I have done this on the Symantec web site (I use the
Norton AV program) all my ports showed as stealth - none was visible.

Is the Sygate Personal Firewall 5.1 any good? You seem to imply that I
could run it as well as the XP firewall together and that they will
not interfere. Is that what you mean?
John.
